27 Nov 2009If you are looking at redoing a portion of your backyard, consider paving it. There are a range of different materials that you can use to create a stunning and versatile outdoor living space. Whether it is redoing a patio that needs repaving or repairing the cement around an in ground pool, paving can be one of the best ways for you to finish off an outdoor area.
There is one initial choice that you need to make when deciding which paving material you want to use. You can opt for paving material that is one solid and continuous solid surface. This is when you would use concrete whether or not it has been colored and textured. You can also choose to pave an area with paving stones or interlocking bricks which are also durable and beautiful but are not one solid piece. Therefore they have a very different look.
If you like the idea of a solid slab paved surface, you may want to think about textured and colored concrete. This can be used quite well in areas such as pool decks, back patios and walkways. Cement that has been colored and textured can resemble other paving materials such as stones and interlocking brick at a much more reasonable price. As well, because there are no seams between different parts of the concrete, weeds cannot grow through them and it can take longer for the paved area to break down and require replacement.
You may wonder how it is possible to color cement. The coloring is added to the cement when it is wet. It is available in a wide range of natural browns, greys and reds. The color you choose will depend on other decorative elements in the area being paved and also your own personal preference. Once the coloring agent has been mixed in with the wet cement it is poured like regular cement is and textured molds are applied to the surface. This prints the concrete with a range of patterns including stones, bricks and other patterns.
You don’t need to worry about the durability of textured concrete. It is very hard and easy to look after. About the only thing you need to remember is to avoid the use of salt as a de-icing agent. This is because salt can break down the cement, causing it to crumble and drastically shortening its lifespan.
If you are not a fan of the concrete slab method of paving, there are other options which can look equally lovely. You should look at the range of interlocking brick and paving stones that are available in natural and cultured stone. Because paving materials are now able to be artificially reproduced (as with cultured stone) you can create massive and stunning landscape projects such as raised flower beds, benches and retaining walls that all coordinate with one another.
If you want to make sure that the paved area looks as good as possible and lasts as long as possible you need to make sure it is properly installed. A qualified landscaper can be a great way to make sure it is installed properly. Unlike cement paving, it is quite easy for weeds to grow up between the individual bricks or stones. There are a few ways that you can prevent this. One of the most commonly used is a plastic barrier that prevents the weeds from growing up. Then, a layer of sand is put down to cushion and level the individual bricks or stones.
Paving choices are much greater than they used to be even a few years ago. Now people can choose from natural or cultured stone. They can also get the look of stone by using colored concrete. Whatever your choice, knowing how to properly install and care for it is critical to maintaining the beauty of the paved area. Be sure that you find out the specific care requirements of any product that you choose to use on your property.
