During common flu, you are often afflicted with painful cough and sore throat. These symptoms should not be ignored and one must consult a doctor without delay and get these properly treated.

Coughs are a body’s defence mechanism to clear the irritation in the windpipe inhibiting the free passage of air to the lungs. Physiological complications alone do not result in coughs, sometimes psychological problems can also trigger them. Cough due to physical problems happens usually when outside irritants and environmental pollutants like smoke, pollen, dust etc invade the body or if you are down with some serious disease. The other types of coughs are the ones driven psychologically and are normally habitual. This type of coughing habit is called Streruphilia and does not have any root cause in physical problems.

Cough can many times be acute or chronic, based on its typical characteristics and on the basis of the period for which it lasts and its intensity. Acute coughing which last less than 3 weeks can be a symptom of either infectious or non-infectious diseases. While conditions like pneumonia and sinus infections result in acute coughing, chronic coughs are usually a result of complications such as asthma and bronchitis.

Consulting a medical practitioner is important to get to the root cause of the problem and taking suitable treatment to get well again. Antihistamines, antibiotics and cough suppressants are some of the medications usually prescribed by the doctors to provide relief from acute coughing. However, chronic coughing might require the sufferer to undergo prolonged therapies, which can go on for months at a stretch until the problem is cured.

As with any other ailment, prevention of cough is much better than having to deal with it later when you are badly suffering from it. To remain away from cough, leading a healthy lifestyle is important, for which you should stay away from smoking and take a healthy and nourishing diet.
