19 Nov 2009When you are thinking of renovating your kitchen, consider your kitchen furniture styles, too. There is more to choose from than you could possibly have imagined. There are as many styles of tables, chairs, side tables, highboys, and cabinetry as there are home styles.
Here are some of the numerous kitchen styles you may choose as well as tasteful design tips to aid you as you complete your perfect new kitchen with just the right furniture.
Cottage style kitchens are homey and warm, patterned after homes built in the’20’s. Kitchens were smaller then, often with wainscoting — called “bead board” today. Lines were straight and simple. The doors were frequently left off cabinets; simple shelving was common. Windows featured small panes of glass and shutters. Natural wood was often applied to both floor and ceiling.
Functional, clean, simple lines typify a Shaker style kitchen. Cabinetry is often made of cherry, though other woods are also appropriate. One of our favorites is “reclaimed” or recycled wood — wood that has been taken from an older building to be reused. You pay a little more for the craftsman’s effort but you get instant antique cabinetry and kitchen furniture in the bargain.
Furniture for Mission style kitchens is boxy, rectangular, and solid. Mission style utilizes a square aesthetic and solid wood construction. In older Mission style homes, the woodwork has often been painted over. Though removing the paint is very labor intensive, you will be rewarded with the warmth of real wood from an earlier era. If you want to know more about Mission style furniture, you will want to investigate its close cousins, Craftsman and Arts and Crafts kitchen furniture styles.
Do you like country flair? Think bright, cheerful paint, wallpapers, and windows hung with curtains of chintz or calico. Clever cabinet door treatments eschew glass in favor of pierced tin panels or even chicken wire. Ceiling beams hung with antiques add a nice touch. Country kitchen furniture can go to either extreme: simple and functional, or frilly and decorative.
Perhaps your taste runs to contemporary. Your contemporary kitchen will have a Scandinavian flair with gleaming stainless steel and big cabinet hardware. Cabinet faces of frosted glass hint at the contents while avoiding a cluttered look.
One of our favorite styles for the kitchen, and the furniture it is home is rustic style. Your rustic kitchen will have large, sturdy tables and chairs. Copper pots and pans and wrought iron give handsome accents. Rustic furniture can be rough-hewn or smoothed and care-worn over time.
Of course, there are many more kitchen furniture styles, as many styles for the kitchen as there are for rest of the home. We suggest you browse the internet, searching for terms including “Kitchen Furniture Styles.” We guarantee you will be amazed at the breadth and depth of the furniture styles that are available.
