19 Nov 2009Heartburn suffers will go to almost any length to avoid this painful condition. On of the best ways is to learn which heartburn foods set off an attack and to avoid these foods in your normal meals.
The list of foods that are triggers differ for every person, however the following list contains many of the foods that are common to different people. Be sure that you add any additional foods that you know as triggers for you.
High fat meats and fatty meats prepared with extra spice can trigger heartburn. Avoid marbled sirloin, ground beef, chicken nuggets and Buffalo chicken wings. The first three are high in fat, the last is high in fat and spicy.
Another group of foods that cause heart burn include sweets, oils and fats. Chocolate heads off this list as in seems to cause more heartburn than all other foods combined. Also in the list are potato and corn chips which cause problems due to the high fat content. Butter cookies are high in both fat and sugar and can cause heartburn in a number of people. Brownies and donuts can also cause flare ups for many people. Many salad dressings have fat and vinegar that can be a trigger for heartburn suffers. Anything that is fired or fatty in general can also cause problems.
There are several fruits, vegetables and juices that are heartburn triggers. These include all of the citrus fruits and citrus juices. Here are a few you should avoid: orange juice, lemon juice, grapefruit, cranberry juice and tomato juice. In addition the the citrus fruits, remember that potatoes, especially when prepared with large amounts of fat, as in mashed potatoes or french fries can cause heartburn. Potato salad contains many of the heartburn foods in combination and can give exceedingly bad heartburn for some people.
There are certain beverages that are high in acid content that may also trigger a heartburn attack. These include coffee or tea and wine or other liquor. Alcoholic drinks can relax the esophagus making the burn even worse.
Pasta can also be a trigger for some people. The most offending types of pasta are macaroni and cheese and spaghetti served with marinara sauce.
Finally, there are some dairy products you may want to avoid. These include cottage cheese, ice cream, milk shakes and sour cream.
By avoiding these trigger foods you may also avoid heartburn. If you suffer major attacks, try avoiding all the foods at first, then slowly see what you can add back to your diet and still avoid heartburn.
